The lush, dreamlike British pop trio Kitchens of Distinction was formed in London in 1986 by singer/bassist Patrick Fitzgerald, guitarist Julian Swales and drummer Dan Goodwin. The band (also known as Kitchen's O.D. and K.O.D.)took their name from a Hygena advertisement and they issued their 1987 debut single "Last Gasp Death Shuffle " on their own Gold Rush label, signing to One Little Indian after the record garnered "Single of the Week " honors in the pages of the NME. Though widely considered a cult band, their 1991 sophomore effort debuted on the U.K. Top 40. Although this ethereal-sounding power trio recorded some dreamy guitar songs with wistful backdrops of sonic textures, Kitchens of Distinction never really fit in with England's Shoegazing scene. Although the scene itself was created more by media than musicians, Kitchens didn't adhere to the demure image and androgynous, whisper-sung stylings of bands such as Slowdive, Chapterhouse, or even My Bloody Valentine. Their Dream Pop was birthed from similar guitar washes of white noise, but singer/bass player Patrick Fitzgerald wasn't afraid to do his own thing and sing his songs with a little more soul than the norm. Kitchens of Distinction's Breathing Fear collects one track from The Death of Cool and three B-sides, two of them simply amazing instrumentals that suggest the band had an entire other genre mastered. Like every release in the band's discography "Breathing Fear " is stunningly beautiful. The music shimmers and wails peacefully, yet with conviction. As incredible as Kitchens of Distinction were in their prime, it's still quite surprising to see just how versatile the band was on this single release. From the touching title track to the moodiness of "Goodbye Voyager, " and the two instrumental closers, they prove their mastery of atmosphere and emotion with Breathing Fear.
