Sordid Humor was a musical band formed in 1987 by the duo of Tom Barnes and Jim Gordon. Barnes' unique vocal style and unusual phrasing was the trademark of Sordid Humor, and he went on to lend his vocals and alt-rock guitar style to Engine 88, and a solo project called the Blimp. Sordid Humor played what, at the time, could best be classified as college rock, releasing several independent releases before breaking up in 1992. Despite their limited success, Sordid Humor's music has survived in the choices of College DJs. They are notable for bringing together musicians such as Adam Duritz, Counting Crows' lead vocalist, to sing back-up vocals and co-write lyrics. Coincidentally, Marty Jones, who played bass for Sordid Humor, is who the Counting Crows song "Mr. Jones " is about. Also appearing is David Immergluck, one-time member of Camper Van Beethoven, who makes appearances on this CD on slide guitar and bass. Crows member David Bryson also produced several of their tracks. Duritz would later use lyrics from Sordid Humor songs "Private Archipelago " and "Jumping Jesus " in live extended versions of their own songs. The most obvious place that Duritz’s presence is shown is on the brilliant “Barbarossa.” It’s one of the album’s slower tracks, but there’s gorgeous guitar layering underneath Barnes’ drawn-out voice. Here Duritz’s vocals are a nice compliment. But enough has already been made here of that connection. This is one of the most under appreciated albums of the 90's. A college rock masterpiece that stands on it's own; it's easy to see why the Crows were such fans.
