Reggae artist Lieutenant Stitchie was born Cleveland Laing in Spanish Town, Jamaica where he was originally a school teacher in his hometown. He began by singing after his idols and influences Dennis Brown, Brigadier Jerry and Ranking Joe.  By 1983. he was dee-jaying on local sound-system at Django, City Light Discotheque, Lightning Super Mix, and Stereo One. Although his styles and names would change during his early days, (his first stage name was Ranking Citrus due to a love of fruit and then Ranking Noseworthy after a popular Jamaican radio program) but his lyrical originality and rapid-fire delivery were already firmly in place.    He won the Dee-Jay Championship of St Catherine in 1983 and assumed the "Stitchie " moniker when he joined forces with King Jammy in 1986 for "Wear Your Size. " Lieutenant Stitchie went on to emerge in the '80s as one of the hottest DJs in the early digital dancehall era. In 1988, he made history by becoming the first dancehall reggae artist signed to a major label, Atlantic Records. He recorded three albums for Atlantic Records and one for Shanachie Music. Although he never received the notoriety that Shabba Ranks did, he was, along with Shabba and Buju Banton, one of the very few dancehall artists to release multiple major-label albums in the groundbreaking early '90s.
